Description

This collection features eight oil paintings that depict houses of early settler families in the Pascagoula, Mississippi area.
Ruth Marion Christian was born August 9th, 1927 in Groton, Connecticut. At the age of sixteen she started working at Elzin Photography where she learned to color, retouch, and develop photographs. During this time she also modeled for advertising photos when the company needed. This lead to a job with New London Instrument Co. calibrating dials and running the dark room.

There she met and married Richard Christian. After living in Ohio for several years, the Christians moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast after Richard was offered a job at Ingalls.

Ruth and her family loved boating and swimming. They enjoyed going to the islands off of the coast of Pascagoula, which is where she received much of her inspiration from for her paintings. Her paintings are also of rivers around the area and portraits of her loved ones. In addition, she used clay to sculpt small figures, such as fisherman, animals, and religious symbols. Ruth has been painting and sculpting her whole life and has had her talent showcased in art shows, art galleries, colleges, and restaurants.

While living in Pascagoula, she attended and was greatly involved with First United Methodist church for over forty-five years. She taught art classes at the church for twenty years and Sunday school for eighteen years. She also volunteered at the head start in Pascagoula for 4 years and at Our Daily Bread for three years.

After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Ruth volunteered at the Pascagoula Public Library, helping in the Genealogy Department. After her husband's death, Ruth lived by herself until 2016 when, at the age of 89 she moved to Sand Hill, Mississippi to live with her son, Brian and wife, Edna.
Mrs. Ruth Christian's paintings depict eight historical homes known in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Some of these homes are no longer standing due to natural disasters.
