In 1995, Else Martin was named Head of the Genealogy and Local History Department after Jean Strickland retired. Martin had worked as Strickland’s Assistant. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the department was expanded to twice its previous size. A wall was added to provide a more seculded area for research and quiet. After Martin's retirement in 2002, library assistants Sherry Owens and Renee Hague headed the department.

The two societies decided on a merger and in 2008 became the Jackson County Historical and Genealogical Society. Through the years, the society has been the driving force behind the Genealogy and Local History Department at the Pascagoula Public Library.
